Yesterday I attended a lunch in Oak Ridge with Senator Maria Cantwell from Washington. (The state. I guess all Senators are from the other Washington in one way or another, although I suspect they all make a point of saying they are not.)
Senator Cantwell serves on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee as does our own Senator Bob Corker of Tennesssee. Both smart people. And the committee is important to B&W Y-12 and USEC, both of whom we are proud to represent at Ackermann PR.
Senator Cantwell pointed out three things that I jotted down, both to assist my aging memory and because I wanted to share them with others.
- Over the next 10 years, half of all the new buildings constructed on the planet will be in China. Half. Think about that.
- Energy is a $6-trillion dollar market. Trillion. With a T. For comparison, the Internet is $1-trillion.
- Co-opetition. That was the word the Senator used to describe how we need to manage relations with China. Pick the spots where we’re going to fight…pick the ones where we’ll get along.
Interesting talk. And in the small world department, it turns out she knows a woman I used to work with at KPRC-TV in Houston back in the early 80s.
Normally I close with everybody back to work, but it’s Saturday, so… oh wait, we’re all type A anyway. OK…everybody back to work.
