This weekend in Paris they are holding an auction to sell many of Marcel Marceau’s personal possessions. (Apparently his impersonal posessions have already been dealt with)
An auction. With an auctioneer. Being vocal.
That just seems so terribly wrong. One can imagine Marceau miming the auction and making us all double over with laughter. But actual sound?
Marceau did make noise at least once. In the Mel Brooks film “Silent Movie” he uttered the only spoken word: “No.” Of course in that same movie a pest control truck crashes, the giant plastic bug goes flying off the top and lands on a table top of an outdoor cafe. The camera zooms in…there sits Henny Youngman. He mouths something and the word card comes up with “Waiter..there’s a fly in my soup.” I laughed so hard I almost choked. Some of the people sitting nearby looked like they wished I would.
OK…everybody back to work.
